Honey Zircon - $4 to $12/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

This Zircon is often referred to as "cocoa" or "honey" color in the trade. No matter what you call it, the finished gemstones out of this material are very pretty.

The colors range from a light honey color to a red/brown/orange which I call "cocoa"color, and are pleasing to the eye. Care must be taken on the red/brown/orange colors to not cut them in a deep design, as they can become too dark, a brilliant cuts (something you might put a garnet in) works best.

In the lighter colors, I always try to cut Zircons in a deeper design to help the already high dispersion. Because Zircon is double refractive some people orientate it along the "c" axis to minimize the doubling. I always cut for yield and do not mind the doubling, after all that is one reason we facet stones in the first place. This material can be heat sensitive, it tends to make the cleavage (which is usually not a problem) separate and cause difficulties.

Note: This material has been hand cleaned and preformend in many cases. If you are not familiar with this material rough, be aware that there is usually a very significant amount of this material with flaws and fissures. It is not unusual to loose 30-50% of the weight during cleaning of this rough. If you buy it uncleaned expect to have significant clarity problems and it is very difficult to tell clarity before actually grinding a window to see inside this rough. Also the clarity issues are often hidden and very difficult to work out as well as can become worse during cleaning. Once cleaned there is seldom any problem cutting this material.
