Cambodian Blue to Blue/Green Zircon (High Zircon) - $12 to $30/carat
Locality: Cambodia

This material is all medium blue/blue green to top blue (Sapphire blue in some cases) in color. These colors are difficult to get, particularity in stones of any size. This color blue to blue/green Zircon is in very high demand in the cut stone market and most of it gets native cut and marketed directly as cut stones and in jewelry. This material has been heated.

Depending on the piece of rough and the color saturation a brilliant design that is on the deeper side is ideal. Barions also will work well in this material. There is not much that will cut this blue to blue/green and have as much sparkle as these Zircons.

Note: It has been my experience that when cutting some Zircons, the finished stone does not always have the color I would expect. Sometimes the color is darker, lighter, or even a different tone than the rough looked like. They usually cut nicely but you cannot always tell finished color exactly from what the rough looks like. Genereally orientating on the "c" axis when possible will help improve color and eliminate doubling.

Note2: If you are wanting that crazy dark blue you some times see in a cut Zircon. That rough is less than 1% that is produced and it is always cut, never rough.

Nigerian Blue Zircon (High Zircon) - $4 to $20/carat
Locality: Nigeria, Africa

Almost all blue Zircon is heated, it originally starts out a tan/brown color, that is not like the Honey Zircon at all, it is really not very pretty. After heating it comes out a nice blue.

This material is medium to medium light in color as rough, it will darken up a bit when it is faceted (depending on the design and axis cut), but will not be that that dark blue that you sometimes see for sale in cut stones. I always try to cut deep designs (like Barions) to increase dispersion and color. Like honey Zircons you may want to orient for the double refraction (or maybe not, I usually cut for yield and depth), the cleavage is usually not a problem.

Note: These stones are all hand cleaned, so the yields will be very good..
