Buying rough by the parcel is a good practical way to get quality rough at a better price. Parcels are cheaper because the pieces of rough have not been hand selected. There may be (or may not be) some pieces of rough in a parcel with minor problems or maybe not ideal shapes and yields.

Parcels are cheaper bacause of this variety and also the fact that I do not have to take the time and labor involved to hand clean each piece of rough. If you have ever hand cleaned rough then you know that doing it takes a significant amount of time and labor.

Parcels can also be cheaper because of the quantity involved, in other words more rough and a larger sale means less time and handling involved and I can afford to sell for a bit less.

Nigerian Peach/Pink/Green Mix - $6/carat
Locality: Nigeria, Africa

This is just a parcel from old odds and end parcels. The material is all medium to light peach/pink/green and really pretty nice.

I have cleaned this material so it is all basically clean, although there maybe an occasional spot here or there.

Colors and shapes are mixed and random. There will be thin ones, fat ones, long ones, short ones (like the song goes).

The average size on the three random counts of 10 stones I sampled and weighed was 3.4 carats average. The range is probably from 2 to 5 carats.

Nigerian Green Tourmaline Parcel - $10/carat
Locality: Nigeria, Africa

This material is very nice and by parcel only... The color is a good grass to almost Kelly green and what I would call a top commercial green. It is not dark and depending on the length of the crystal the "c" axis is open (yel/green mostly) on most of this rough. There are some inclusions, spots and typical rind cracks here and there. This is by parcel and the price reflects this, I have not cleaned it, but I did hand select it. There is a lot of very nice cutting and clean stones in these crystals. Weights of parcels are approximate... expect them to vary a little.
