Nigerian Green Tourmaline - $4 to $16/carat

The color of this material is green with a very slight teal tone to moss green depending on the piece.

This Tourmaline makes a very nice stone in about any design. The "c" axis on most of these crystals is dark, which is typical of this material, but because the color is all pretty medium/light in saturation the "c" axis will not have much effect on finished stones.

This material is ideal for about any design because it is all a very nice medium/light color, there are no dark ones here and this is very good cutting. It is very difficult to get this quality color green, because most green Tourmaline tends to dark muddy green in color.

Crystal Green Tourmaline - $4 to $6/carat

This is nice inexpensive Tourmaline cutting, especially for the size of these crystals... The color is a green (slight yellow) to moss green depending on the piece and make a very nice stone. The "c" axis on most of these crystals is dark, which is typical of this material. This material is ideal for designs like my "Smith Bar" and "Easy Emerald" and other designs that are made for this type of rough. Also these are nice in my "Bi Color Split" , "Bi Color Split 3.0 , "Streeech", "Streeeech" designs.

They will cut nice green stones, not too dark. Notice that there are some crystal points in this material and they may determine the best cuts for some pieces. This is what I would call a nice commercial green color...

Kelly Green Tourmaline - $12 to $30/carat
Locality: Nigeria, Africa

This material is top Kelly green... I have skinned the rind off of these crystals because they were very dinged up. The yields will be very good because I have already skinned off any problems or low yield shapes.

What is left is the hearts of the crystals and as you can see they are some of the best Kelly green that I have ever come across. The "c" axis on almost all of these stones is open but a darker slightly yellow/green (except for the very large ones which are dark, mainly because of the size). These crystals will all cut top commercial stones, and finding this material rough is almost impossible. I prefer this material in brilliants and checker board designs, it is great in a "Smith Bar".

Nigerian Green to Blue/Green Tourmaline - $6 to $20/carat

This material is from another new mine, and as you can see it ranges in color from a nice green, blue green to a yellow/gold green. The "c" axis is open and good color, some of it is the yellow/green you see in the picture... it cuts easy with some heat sensitivity. Floater (pictured) was cut in a yellow/blue green piece, the "c" was yellow green and it was cut on the "c" axis.

African Green Crystal Tourmaline - $6 to $12/carat
Locality: Nigeria, Africa

 

Clean (flawless) green crystal Tourmaline like this is hard to find. This material will cut very nice green (grass,slightly yellow green, not dark) stones, and as you can see they will be large. The best designs for this material are Opposed Bars (especially the short blocky pieces) and Emerald cuts (My "Easy Emerald" would be a good choice), that leave the short ends ("c" axis) steep, 68-72 degrees. The yields on the long crystals will be very high, it cuts easy with some heat sensitivity.
