Yellow Gold Scapolite - $1.50 to $6/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

  Yellow Gold Scapolite

This material makes a nice, not to hard to cut, addition to most collections. Scapolite is a 6 on the hardness scale and has a 1.56 refractive index (R.I.). It does have some cleavage, but it is usually not a problem, orientate for the best color, which is usually the "c" axis, but it makes a nice stone on the a-b also. Polish on a Lucite lap with cerium, I have had good luck with Ultra laps, almost any design works well.

  Lilal Purple Scapolite

Purple Scapolite is even less common than gold Scapolite, but it makes a nice addition to most collections. The color range of this material is purple to a violet/pink/red color. Scapolite is a 5-6 on the hardness scale and has a 1.56 refractive index (R.I.). It does have some cleavage, but it is usually not a problem, orientate for the best color, which is usually the "c" axis, but it makes a nice stone on the a-b also. Polish on a Lucite lap with cerium, I have had good luck with Ultra laps, almost any design works well.

Note: Purple Scapolite is some times irradiated, I have no idea on this material.
