Bahia Amethyst - $0.75 to $4/carat
Locality: Brazil, South America

This is from a new mine and I certainly hope it keeps producing this high quality material.

This rough is similar in size and shape to Irai material (new mine in the same area) and is all large and well shaped so the yields will be very good.

This Amethyst has excellent color and is some of the best material I have seen in a long time.

The color is solid medium saturation and has purple, red, and blue flashes in it that is similar to "Siberian Amethyst". However this Amethyst is not dark like a lot of the "Siberian" and will cut a very nice stone.

The color(s) and saturation of this material is better quality than any Bolivian Amethyst I have ever seen.

Bolivian Amethyst is not nearly as vibrant or saturated and tends to cut a lighter more monochromatic colored stone. This Iria material cuts a much better looking finished stone than any Bolivian material and has the "Siberian" type of colors that no Bolivian material can match.

This Amethyst is ideal for about any design and as the pieces get larger I would tend to pick brilliant and checker board designs.

Note: There are of course variations of color in this material, that is why there are different prices. Obviously the lower priced material maybe be a bit lighter color and/or it may have some zones.

Note the gorgeous magenta, purple, blue color that this material has.

Like I said I have trimmed the majority of color zones in this material out. But you may have to deal with an occasional color zone depending on the piece of rough.

Left - As you can see this material has an occasional color zone, in this piece the zone is a paper thin line between the colors. Some color zones are larger.

Usually with a small orientation the zone(s) will completely disappear. The only color zones I did not trim out were ones like in the piece above that were minute or zones that would orientate and not be visible.

Also it is worth noting that this material has quite a bit of color shift in it depending on the lighting and often what looks light color or zones in one light source will be a blue/purple color in another light. So examine the rough in incandescent and florescent light when orientating.
