Uruguayan Amethyst Points "Extra Color" - $1.75 to 6.00/carat
Locality: Uruguay, South America
![]()
Shown above is a 9.8mm x 7.2mm deep - 3.64 carat "Shrike" cut from piece of "Extra Fine" Uruguayn Amethyst.
As far as I am concerned this is the best Amethyst that there is, the colors are spectacular. These points are very hard to find in larger sizes and because of their color saturation can take some special handling.Note: There are of course variations of color in this material, that is why there are different prices. There are some people claiming the material they are selling is "Extra" but it is not. Remember you will get what you pay for, if it is too cheap, well...
I have also seen people labeling this material as "siberian" color which is false. Siberian material is quite different in location as well as color and saturation.
Uruguayan points come in several color grades, "Extra Fine" is the top color there is. If it does not say "Extra Fine" it is the lower color grade. This material can appear a little zoned to the naked eye, but really does not take a lot of orientation, because once cut, the colors mix. I cut them in brilliant designs and this material is one of my most popular.
Note: The color grades from lowest color to highest color are Super Extra (there are grades lower than Super Extra, but they are seldom around, I only carry the top two color grades), Extra, and Extra Fine (is the top color).
Note: "Extra Premium Grade" is not a grade, it is a sales pitch some one made up, this grade does not exist in the grading system for this rough. It is probably a lower grade some one is trying to pass of as a higher grade.
Occasionally "Extra Fine" is available. This material is rare, not usually available and darker in color. "Extra Fine" is very saturated in color and can cut a dark stone if care is not taken.
