Opal - Red & Orange Mexican Cherry Opal - $6 to $12/carat
Locality: MexicoMexican Fire Opal
This material is large and well shaped (this type of Opal is often in very difficult shapes to get good yields out of, it just forms in convoluted shapes naturally), and is great color...

Do not confuse this with the plain orange and yellow orange colors which are lower grade and cheaper.

The color of this material is exceptional, cut them in about any opal design,. Opal can be heat sensitive, so be careful dopping.

Here are a couple articles that deal with cold doping...

What to watch for when buying Opal... If the opal is wet or has not been out of water for at least a few months a lot of it will crack and be unusable. It is often sold in water because opal absorbs fluid (water) and will weigh more at the time of the sale. If you buy it wet, expect 50-90% to go bad from cracks and the colors will appear different when it does dry and some material will become cloudy as it dries out.

Note: Remember that Opal weighs light, so look at the millimeter measurements listed for size. Also all the Opal I sell is dry and has been for quite a while to elimate the water/wet problems Opals can have.
