Malaya Garnet - $20 to $50/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

This Garnet is from a brand new find.

As you can see this material is light pink/peach and some what nodule shaped. Almost flesh tone in some cases.

This material has a definite color shift in it and will look more pink or peach with some metallic highlights depending on the light.

This is new production and it is too early to tell how much more (if any) material will become available. So if you like the color I would not hesitate.

These pieces are hand selected and clean, but this material in general is not clean and has a lot of included crystals and carbon spots in it.

I had to go through a lot of kilos to get clean stones. Also this material does not occur in large sizes, a large stone clean in this material is not much larger than 5 carats rough. There are a few a bit larger but they are rare. Cut this material in any deeper brilliant design, it will look very much like champange diamonds when cut and faceted.

Note: Almost sll of these pieces of rough will cut a carat or a little larger, they re all nodule shaped and the yields will be quite good.

Malaya Garnet - $30 to $125/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what a Malaya Garnet is... I have seen people selling all types of Garnets and calling them "Malaya Garnets" that were not even close to what a real "Malaya Garnet" should look like.

What the name refers to is the color of the Garnet. True Malaya Garnets have a peach/orange to pink/salmon color to them (the picture does not do the color justice). Malaya's should be light to medium in saturation. Like all Garnets the saturation will get darker as the Garnets become larger.

Malaya Garnets are actually found in several mining areas, mostly in Tanzania. But there are some look a likes from other mining regions. Malaya Garnets are very seldom over 5 carats rough and a 10 plus carat stone is large. Almost all Tazania Malaya Garnets are nodules and alluvial. Quality Malaya Garnets in sizes over 1 carat cut are very difficult to get and bring premium prices on the open market.

These Garnets like most Garnets are a mix of several types of Garnets. Spessertite, Almandine, Grossular, and some times Pyrope. The colors and refractive index varies with the mix of types. In general Malaya Garnet is R.I. 1.74 to 1.78 with the average being 1.75.

These Garnets are easy to cut, and work well in almost any design. Faceted Malaya Garnets are very striking and are highly sought after by collectors. I prefer brilliant designs and as the stones get larger I tend to cut them in brilliants with checker board crowns.

Malaya Garnet - $8 to $16/carat

Not to be confused with the brighter orange "Tangerine Garnet". This peach/orange Malaya Garnet is very sought after in Africa. The color is a little more fiery than the Mandarin Garnet, but similar, with some pink/gold highlights. It works well in almost any brilliant Garnet design.
