Tanzania Rhodolite Garnet - $4.00 to $36/carat

This is one of my favorite stones to cut, it is also one of the best sellers in finished gems, everybody knows Rhodolite (Tanzanian rough is the color everyone thinks of when you say Rhodolite). This material is alluvial nodules and is getting scarce, the current deposits have been worked for quite a while now and are beginning to play out. It is easy to cut, and works well in almost any design with high yields.

This material is ideal for cutting checker boards and brilliants. Because of the good saturation I recommend that this type of material should be cut in 1 to 6 carat stones. If faceting a larger stone, care must be take and checker boards are a very good idea because of saturation, this is a good rule of thumb for almost all red/purple Garnet.

Note: In gerneral you do not want Garnets that are silky (a few bubbles or a few pieces of silk are not an issue and fairly normal in a lot of Garnets), especially Rhodolite the silk (unless light) generally cuts dull dark stones, and is a waste of time to cut. There are a few exceptions when the silk makes the stone glow a bit, but this type of stone is the exception not the rule when cutting silky material.

Lilac Rhodolite Garnet - $6/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

Sometimes this material is referred to as "Umbalite" because it was discovered in Umba Valley. I do not know for sure that this is from "Umba Valley" so I hesitate to use that name. One thing for sure is, that this material has a light pink/purple or Lilac color that I have very rarely ever seen anywhere else. It does not come in large sizes, except for a very rare one, occasionally. This material is beautiful in about any design (great for earrings) and cuts with little difficulty, except for some slight heat sensitivity.
