Mali Garnet - $8 to $40/carat
Locality: Republic of Mali, Africa

This is very interesting Garnet, it's an Andradite/Grossularite mix.

It comes out of the ground in large 5-40 lbs round shaped pieces (I suppose they could be called crystals) with little horns or points on them, and just looks like a clay/gray rock.

The material does not look gem like at all, until they break the pieces apart to find the facetable areas.

That is probably why the material is seldom over 5 carats rough.

This Garnet is easy to cut and looks very diamond like in a brilliant design. I usually try to use a deep design to help with dispersion. The colors range from a lime/green, to yellow/green with some bronze/chocolate colors. This material is R.I.=1.77, so it has a lot of sparkle when cut.

Note: This material is in very high demand cut. At the 2005 Tucson Febuary gem show quality cut Mali Garnets in the hot yellow/green to gold were selling wholesale for $150 to $400/carat for 1 to 2 carat stones. Stones over 2 carats (I only saw a couple) were selling wholesale for $650 to $900/carat. I did not see more than half a dozen Mali Garnets over 1 carat in the entire show.

This material is mine run, but I have gone though it and taken any thing obviously bad out of it... So the material is pretty nice, not completely flawless there will be some flaws, it is mine run. But most of this material is pretty good...

The color range is almost all yellow/green chartruese to gold/yellow. There is almost no honey or coffeee color in this parcel.. These stones make great earring stones and accent color stones.

Madagascar Malaya Garnet - $12 to $16/carat
Locality: Madagascar, Africa

This material is called Malaya in Madagascar and is very hard to get. They call it Malaya Garnet, but to me it does not really have the intense peach/orange that I associate with Malaya Garnets from Tanzania.

I would really call this some form of Grossular or very pale Rhodolite, which is why I have placed it on this page. It is very light, pink to almost a peach tone or flesh tone, interesting color. This material cuts a very nice bright stone and works in about any design. I tend to cut it in deeper designs because it is light enough and has great dispersion. This material is in very limited supply and anything clean over 3 carats is large.
