Rose Malaya Garnet - $6 to $30/carat
Locality: Tanzania, Africa

When anybody asks me for a very good quality red (sometimes with peach highlights, depending on the light) Garnet in a larger size this is what I recommend to them.

This material cuts easy and is not too saturated for large stones, I cut my "Signature #6" design (5.18 cts, pictured) in it often, with great success.

The best type of design to cut this in, is a Brilliant with moderate crown depth and this material is great in oppose bars and checker boards.

This material has all been hand cleaned and is often almost preformed on some pieces. Needless to say there is both rough loss and a lot of labor to clean this material. the pricing reflects this...

This material out of the ground is often odd shapes and has a lot of rind issues like cracks and fissure that I have eliminated.

Note: This material varies a little in color from red with slight pink to peach highlights to red with orange. The rose/red stones tend to be darker and are lower prices. The trade name for this Garnet is some times called "Gypsy Rose" or "Cherry". It is a pyrope-almandine-grossular mix.

Note: I have hand cleaned this material so it is basically clean, there maybe an occasional spot I missed, or I did not think was worth cleaning out.

Malai Garnet- $2 to $4/carat
Locality: Kenya, Africa

There is a very interesting story behind how this Garnet got its name, at least what I was told by the African dealers I bought it from.

When this Garnet was first mined in the 1960's, they though that it was going to make them rich, so they went to the commercial cutting houses to try to sell it. But the Garnet has a peach/red color to it when it is cut, and the commercial houses only wanted red and did not buy it. So they could not sell it, and called it Malai, which means outcast, or whore in their language, and went on to mine other things. Lucky for us, as Garnets have gotten popular and demand has gone up for new colors, this Garnet is being mined again. It really cuts a very nice stone, and works well in almost any good Garnet design.
