Oregon Carving Sunstone - $3 to $30/carat

Carving sunstone can basically be any type, color, color with schiller, copper schiller, champange, watermelon, multi-color... Often what makes an ideal piece of carving Sunstone is not only color but the shape of the stone. The above picture is a good example, it is long and while has good depth is not deep and is a very nice watermelon bi color. This piece is ideal for carving because it is clean and has very good color as well as an ideal carving shape. Basically for carving sunstone you want pretty colored material with some schiller (I prefer it in carving) and clean fracture free material.

Note: I have hand cut all the flaws (unless I just miss some thing) out of this rough and trimmed the pieces. So what you are getting in these pieces is prime material with very little to no waste. Typically there is a fair amount of loss when cleaning/orientating this material so hand cleaned material really is a bargain although it may not look like it at first. Also the colors and schiller are pretty much orientated.
