Labradorite - $1 to $4/carat
Locality: Mexico![]()
This material has been around a long time and is fairly common in small sizes.Large sizes say over 10 grams (50 carats) clean are entirely another matter.
In large sizes clean... this material is rare and hard to come by. Large sizes are not common.
Labradorite has long been a stone that faceters have cut and polished because it is found literally all over the world and readily available inexpensively. There are deposits in northern Arizona (I collected it as a kid), Oregon, and many other states as well as Mexico, Africa, China, India... Basically it is very abundant and in smaller sizes a common mineral.
Because Labradorite is not especially hard (6 to 6.5 Moh's) and the refractive index is fairly low (1.52-1.56 about the same as Quartz or a little lower). Labradorite has not really been widely used in the jewelry trade. At least until recently... Labradorite is now becoming more commonly used and available faceted.
It does make a nice faceted stone and is a pretty champagne color. Larger faceted pieces because of rarity are a bit more valuable. But smaller material (under 10 carats) is not considered especially valuable and is common. Labradorite makes a nice inexpensive faceted stone and is good for jewelry use in protected setting.
Note: In my opinion there are some pretty questionable sales practices happening with Labradorite. A lot of these sales people are making claims about value that are very unlikely to happen. Labradorite makes a nice faceted stone and should be viewed as a nice stone... This material has all been hand cleaned.
Note: The going rate for this material commercially faceted is $15/carat for smaller stones to $25-$45/carat for large (over 10 carats) stones. So there can be good profit in cutting this material.
