Danburite - $1.50 to $3/carat
Locality: Mexico
![]()
Danburite is a collector stone really, there has not really ever been a large enough supply of the rough to create a market for it in faceted stones. It has a refractive index of 1.63 and cuts a stone that looks quite diamond like in appearance. If you are looking for a diamond substitute and cannot find white Sapphire (do not want to pay for it) or Zircons... Danburite is a nice inexpensive choice.
It is slightly heat sensitive and does have some cleavage that is usually not a problem, but can appear once and a while. I found that it polishes best with diamond (I use an 8,000 and 50,000 zinc). If you have not cut any of this material, it makes a nice stone and I recommend that you give it a try.
