I do not generally sell or recommend that anybody buy Emeralds that have been oiled. In my personal opinion I find the oiling of Emeralds a problem.

Are all Emeralds treated and what is your opinion?

If you want the rich green of Emeralds, I suggest other stones like Chrome Tourmaline and Tsavorite Garnet . These will wear better, have better optical performance and are natural, not oiled and treated like almost all Emeralds are.

Chrome Beryl/Emeralds are not dark green like the treated South American Emeralds. These stones are not treated/oiled to my knowledge. Because these stones are not oiled they appear lighter in color. Mint green is as dark as they get and it is not a dark mint.

Note: I would tend to only call the darker material Emeralds, but I have seen material just as light as some of this from Columbia being called Emeralds. Also, in the commercial trade it is all pretty much being called Emeralds. Basically this is like Ruby and pink Sapphire, there is no clear line, and one man's Emerald is another man's Chrome Beryl.

Zambian Emeralds/Chrome Green Beryl - $30 to $1000/carat

This material is untreated, no oil or Opticon, as far as I know, there are no Guarantees. It has been in heavy demand since the wide spread publicity of the treatment of "Colombian Emeralds". These Emeralds/Chrome Beryl's have a very nice light mint green to a medium/light Emerald green with just a touch of blue highlights. This material is some of the largest cleanest (for green Beryl) that I have ever seen and the color is quite good depending on the piece. Of course the less expensive stones are lighter in color.

Zambian Emeralds/Chrome Green Beryl - $4 to $600/carat

Zambian Emerald/Green Beryl is produced very sporadically, there does not seem to be any significant organized mining, so the supply is extremely limited. Because this material is usually untreated (no oil or Opticon), it has been in heavy demand since the wide spread publicity of the treatment of "Colombian Emeralds". These Emeralds/Chrome Beryl's have a very nice light mint green to a medium/light Emerald green with just a touch of blue highlights.

These are not flawless (a couple will probably cut clean), but can be considered very clean for Emeralds. I will use the same grading system for these as I use on cut stones. I suggest cutting classic step cuts ("Easy Emerald") or Barions to help deepen color, depending on the stone, like all Beryl they can be a little heat sensitive. This material tends to cut lighter than you think it's going to, I think it is the brilliance when they are cut making them look lighter.
