Zambian Aquamarine (Beryl) - $6 to $100/carat

Aquamarine is the birth stone for the month of March.

At it's best, the color is a rich blue with sea green highlights. Commercially the color tends to be a heated blue/blue. It is a shame to me because the blue/green to green/blue color is really very nice and to me a prettier, richer color.

Note: Aquamarine is often heated to turn it all blue and eliminate the green. Green in the rough is often a good sign that there has been no heating done, but the green in the stone is not proof positive of unheated material.

For anybody that has cut Zambian material, it soon becomes a favorite. The color ranges from a yellow/green/blue to blue/green to a quality blue. some of the color is what is reffered to in the trade as "double" color. This material is best when cut in a Barion, or other designs that have deeper bodies and proportional crowns. Be careful not to cut (most Beryl's) in a brilliant design with a shallow crown, it tends to over power the color.
