Spinels

Spinels
Date -
Pricing as of April 2008

Color: Blue, pink, peach, red, lavender, purple, occasionally color change and unusual colors.

Note: Spinels have no treatments.

Note2: Generally I increase the price for size over 1 carats clean. Clean stones over 2 carats bring double the range. Over 4 carats is collector territory and prices are what ever the stones will bring.

Note3: There is a very limited supply of Spinels in any color, but I am going to break out the pink and red Spinels in the pricing because they are truly rare and in very high commercial demand which drives the prices much higher.

Pale (almost colorless to 15% tone) - Pale to light.
Comments - This material actually is valuable, especially when cut into a large interesting design.
Pricing - In general pricing this material is some what defendant on size, the larger the stone the better the color shows. I generally price this material $65/ct to $125/ct and a minimum of $150 for a small stone to cover the labor.
Pricing - Large Pale pink stones $180 to $1400/ct.

Light (15% tone to 30%) - Light.
Comments - This material is valuable. I sell it faceted quite well, especially when cut into an unusual design.
Pricing - I generally price this material $125/ct to $360/ct and a minimum of $150 for a small stone to cover the labor.
Pricing - Large light pink stones $360 to $2400/ct (bubble gum).

Light/Medium (30% tone to 45%) - Light/medium.
Comments - This material is valuable and not easy to acquire in larger sizes clean. I cut this material in the medium to large size ranges and typically use unique designs
Pricing - I generally price this material $165/ct to $480/ct and a minimum of $150 for a small stone to cover the labor.
Pricing - Light/medium pink/purple/red stones $360 to $3600/ct (hot bubble gum to purple/red).

Medium (45% tone to 65%) - Medium.
Comments - This material I is ideal color in pinks to pink/reds. For other colors it can be a little dark depending on the color, so design and orientation is important. I cut this material in the smaller to large size ranges and typically use unique designs
Pricing - I generally price this material $90/ct to $800/ct and a minimum of $150 for a small stone to cover the labor.
Pricing - Medium red/pink/purple/peach stones $600 to $10,000/ct (top red, large size).

Dark (85% tone to 100%) - This material is around, usually very dark. I seldom cut any thing this dark.
Comments - Not much to do with this saturation but cut melee.
Pricing - What ever the going rate for melee is.

Special - As we all know as cutters some times a stone just comes out "special" for what ever reason. On these kinds of stones I basically price how ever I feel like. Because this stone comes under the "special" category I often do not care if I sell the stone or not. So I usually price it high enough that if I do sell it, I get a very good price. Enough to make me say "Oh well..." and sell it. So be aware that some times I just price a stone high because I do not care if I sell it. Ironically these stones usually sell the fastest...
