Specialty (Garnets)
Date - Pricing as of April 2008Color: Odd Garnets of all colors, color shift Garnets, color changes of all types.
Note: Garnets come in about all types of odd colors and color changes, as well as what I would call a color shift. Color shift is not a change, just looks different depending on the light. A color change must actually change color strongly enough that the Garnet no longer looks like the same color when it changes.
Note2: Because Garnets come in all types of odd colors and color shifts as well as color changes there is obviously no way to set up a pricing guide. There is just too much diversity and just plain odd stones.
Note3: In both odd Garnets and color change as the stones become larger, say over 1 or 2 carats, there is a significant value increase per carat for the stones.
About all I can do give some basic guide lines and tips about pricing this type of Garnets. Some of these tips will sound obvious, some of them will not be.
Pricing Odd Garnets and Color Change Garnets
Odd Garnets - Some of these types of Garnets can be real collector stones. Pricing just depends on the size, color, and clarity of the stone. The larger the stone in general the higher the price. Color wise, the more pleasant and brighter the stone the higher the price.
Color Shift Garnets - A color shift is not considered a color change because the shift is not strong or complete enough. Pricing depends on how strong the shift is as well as how pretty the shift is.
Color Change Garnets - The color change must be almost total to be called a color change Garnet. There are many color change Garnets and combinations. But remember that in most cases the stone is going to be viewed in mixed light so a stone that has pretty colors in all types of light is the most valuable.
Special - As we all know as cutters some times a stone just comes out "special" for what ever reason. On these kinds of stones I basically price how ever I feel like. Because this stone comes under the "special" category I often do not care if I sell the stone or not. So I usually price it high enough that if I do sell it, I get a very good price. Enough to make me say "Oh well..." and sell it. So be aware that some times I just price a stone high because I do not care if I sell it. Ironically these stones usually sell the fastest...
