Ray Tech - Nu Bond Laps

Nu Bond 1200 LapThere was a fire at the factory that makes Nu Bonds and I am currently unable to get them. I have no idea when production will be available. I have had them on back order sine last Feb 2007.

These laps are not as flat and do not wear as well as a steel lap does in the long run. However they cut much finer when new than a steel lap and thus leave a nicer pre-polish finish than a steel lap of similar grit.

They actually cut much finer than the grit size indicates. The 600 Nu Bond (red) cuts really more like a 1200 steel and the 1200 Nu bond (blue) cuts like a 3,000 steel lap.

I love the Nu Bond 1200 lap for an extra fine pre-polish on Quartz and Beryl (How Do I Polish Quartz & Beryl?)

The 1200 works great on Beryl and Quartz. But because the Nu Bond 1200 cuts so fine, on other materials the lap almost always leaves an orange peel type of finish on other stones that is hard to work with.

Note: The 600 (cuts like a 1200 actually) works well and some people really like it, but I prefer a 1200 flat steel lap for most materials.

I do not find the coarse Nu Bond laps all that good for me. The coarser Nu Bond laps just do not hold up like a solid steel lap of the same grit will. That is why I generally do not stock them.

Jeff's Notes: These laps wear fairly well but the coating on them is not heavy and can be gouged and or scraped easily. It is important to be gentle when using these laps. The coating is silk screened (I think) on the base metal lap. If you start to see a metal/worn area on the face of one of these laps you have worn through the surface coating. If you continue to cut in the worn area the base metal will usually cause nasty scratches.
Dyna Discs
These laps are made from a computer circuit board type of material and coated with diamonds of various grits. I do not recommend or stock them, and in my opinion I think people are much better off with steel laps of some type.
