Gauges
Note:
I do not carry or recommend a metal steel caliper gauge it is just too easy to chip a stone with a metal gauge.

20mm thickness gauga 20mm Thickness Gauge

This is an inexpensive thickness gauge. It is not the quality of a Swiss or German gauge but it is 1/6th the price too.

This gauge is ideal for checking girdle thickness and widths on contest stones.

The dial is spring leaded, so you just squeeze the lever to take a reading. The knob will lock the lever for a fixed setting.

Note: Ifor contest cutting get a ball bearing the correct dimensions and then set this gauge using to ball bearing.

Price $25.95

Brass Gauge (mm/inch) Brass Sliding Gauge (mm/inches)
These are ideal for your pocket at a gem show, and a good compromise between quality and price.

I like to carry one of these around with me at any gem show I attend.

They are very handy for estimating rough (not cut stones, the metal can chip a finished stone easily), and if I should lose one (I have) I am not out much money.

Note: I usually use a little graphite powder to lubricate them when they are new.

Price $10.95

Fiber Glass Dial GaugeSwiss Dial Gauge (mm/.1 accuracy)
I use one of these all of the time, you definitely need something like this if you are planning to do any measuring of cut stones or while you are cutting.
This gauge is made out of fiberglass and is very accurate and easy to use.

This is much better quality than the cheaper asian or Indian made gauges.

Note: That it is marked in "mm" and inches.

The fiberglass will not chip a stone like a metal gauge will, you should never use a metal gauge on anything but rough. I keep mine beside my faceting machine and use it all the time (150 mm length),

Price $29.95
