Pink Tourmaline Heart Squared

Heart Squared - Cutting Remarks

The Nigerian pink Tourmaline "Heart Squared" at left is 10.7mm x 11mm x 7.6mm deep cut by Jeff R. Graham

I have an article with step by step pictures of the "Heart Squared" I cut in the picture.

Cutting - "Heart Squared" a true checker board heart

A lot of people have asked for a checker heart... So here is a true checker board heart. To my knowledge this is the only true checker board heart available and published.

Cut this in about any medium to light material, I like it in Tourmaline (surprised?). It cuts a bright stone and works well in about any material.

This is not a good design for a new cutter. It's not that difficult for an experienced cutter but it can be a little bit of a challenge depending the cutter's skill level. Once you have cut the design once and seen how the crown (in particular) comes together, it is not that difficult to cut. But this design does initially take some experience.

Note1: Be sure and cut the pavilion centered over the dop, like most hearts. All the pavilion tiers can be cut to 43 degrees to create a temporary center. Then cut to their proper angles.

Note2: The P2, C1 facets cut fast and are not far apart, so a bigger stone and/or a fine lap is a good idea. This should be a large stone - 10mm and up would be my suggestion. Besides 10mm is not that big and a heart shape really shows better in a larger size.

Note3: C2, C8, C13 are the same angle but broken up into different steps for ease of cutting. The two facets on the top of the heart C13 just touch in. I polished them in, they are just there to square up C10.

Note4: When cutting in P15(G) you will need to check the L/W to get the proper size or rough in P16 to establish the girdle.

I did not cut this design this way but here are some cutting notes from a USFG list member GemBob that may be of help...

Extra Notes: Cut sequences
C10 28.00 12-36-60-84 Cut to meet C8,C9.
C11 20.50 96-24-48-72 Cut to meet C10.
Cut the above in the following sequence...
C10 12-84
C11 96-24-72
C10 36-60
C11 48 (cut to same width as C11 96) This gives you "meet points" all the way!

Enjoy cutting your "Heart Squared"... Drop me an email to let me know your results and what you've cut, or feel free to inquire if you have any questions or need some help regarding this design.
